“Dogs Are People, Too” is an article I came across in the NY Times this morning by Gregory Berns about research on dog brains. To quote:
FOR the past two years, my colleagues and I have been training dogs to go in an M.R.I. scanner — completely awake and unrestrained. Our goal has been to determine how dogs’ brains work and, even more important, what they think of us humans.
Now, after training and scanning a dozen dogs, my one inescapable conclusion is this: dogs are people, too.
Don’t know about you, but I found that totally amazing. Not the “dogs are people” part since The Gerret reminds me of that every day, but that they actually got dogs to voluntarily get into an MRI machine and sit still. Are you kidding me?

New banners installed in Virginia’s backyard over in Chatham County. (That’s “Virginia” the person, not “Virginia” the state. This is North Carolina’s Chatham County.) Perfect location. Great view from the porch deck.

My first set of chicken-themed place mats has been quite popular so I’ve created two more sets featuring hens and roosters that hang out at Bourbon, Dogs and Art. You can order them through the online store or if you’re in the neighborhood, stop by!
These are 12×16 indoor/outdoor place mats, perfect for picnic tables, wipe clean with a sponge. The images are stylized in a sort of Japanese woodcut manner.

Okay, granted I’m a bit slow. I missed Black Friday and Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and whatever Tuesday was and it’s already late Wednesday and there’s a full moon and the dogs are howling and what can I say. Call me old-fashioned but that’s what happens when you don’t start thinking about Christmas until after Halloween. Anyway, Linda, playing the role of my offshore sweatshop, has cranked out a bunch of new pillows featuring her artistry and my images and they will likely soon be on sale in the BDA Store (once I get them individually photographed) and for sure will be available at the Saxapahaw Holiday Market December 8 and 9. Check out the picture above. These pillows are like the world’s best Christmas candy, I kid you not.
I’ve already added several new sets of indoor/outdoor place mats to the store. The nice thing about the place mats is that they’re very easy and economical to mail as presents since they’re not fragile or heavy.
Here’s a set for folks who like my leaf and banner artwork:

And here’s a set for folks who share our interest with chickens and eggs:

I expect I’ll have more to post and say quite soon, but figured this stuff shouldn’t wait since the world is so stressed out about gifting right now.
And since I missed Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, let me hereby declare BOURBON, DOGS AND ART DECEMBER! Have a drink, buy some art and adopt a shelter dog. It doesn’t get any better than that. Really.

Excellent forecast for the weekend and the studio tour. Leaves are starting to turn. There’s beautiful early fall light so I had to stop preparing for a bit and photograph some of the banners. Yet again. Must have hundreds of shots of the banners. Luckily they always look different.

The yurt studio is turning back into the yurt gallery as it gets hung with new pieces surrounded by greatest hits.

And, in an acknowledgement of local culture and challenging economic times, this year I’m introducing the Bourbon, Dogs and Art Outlet Store, where art gets all over just about everything.

So hope y’all can come on by. And remember to wear sensible shoes.
